Grammar Lessons

Instructions: Read, study, and learn this lesson.  Then do the exercise.  When you are satisfied that you understand the lesson, take the test.

1. The simple predicate or verb may consist of a single word or a group of words.

2. If it has more than one word, the group of words is called a verb phrase.

3. The verb phrase is also marked with periods.

Examples:

.Has. David .called. you?

We .will run. three laps today.

Exercise, Lesson 26

Instructions: In the following sentences, mark the verbs or verb phrases with periods.

1. I was born and raised in a time when football reined as king of all spectator sports and leisure activities.

2. Chicago Illinois is home to Soldier’s Field, where high school pompom squads and cheerleaders created appropriate jingles as a reminder of their ultimate quest.

3. It was the place where the super-bowl of all high school leagues longed to experience.

4. When and where did football originate?  It began as a different version  in China during ancient civilization, sometime around 3000 BC.

5. The Egyptians and Greeks also played a modified version that involved physical contact.

6. Back then it was socially unacceptable for women to play the game.

7. It wasn’t until the 1800’s that football was played with some standards.

8. There was flag football, soccer, and rugby, each with it’s own unique set of rules mostly centered on physical contact involving the ball itself or the person carrying the ball.

9. In November of 1869, the first American football game was recorded. It  was played between two elite colleges, Rutgers and Yale.

10. A Physical Education Teacher named Porter Wilson initiated the idea of using a cloth belt called a flag in place of physical contact around 1953.
