Complex sentences

Short sentences can be made into complex sentences and arranged according to how important they are. The most important sentence will be an independent clause, and the less important sentence will be a dependent clause.

1. An independent clause is a group of words that contains a verb and a subject and expresses a complete thought.

2. A clause that cannot stand alone but depends on another clause is a dependent clause.

3. A dependent clause adds an item of information to an independent clause and causes it to sound incomplete:

Complete: We .had. lunch. (independent clause)

Incomplete: Before the game .started. (dependent clause)

4. A dependent clause only makes sense and sounds complete with an independent clause:

Complete: {Before the game started}, we .had. lunch.

5. A complex sentence contains an independent clause and at least one dependent clause.

Example: {Before the party started}, we .sang. happy birthday.
