English Vocabulary Skills Development PREFIXES, SUFFIXES, ROOTS, AND CONFUSING WORDS OF ENGLISH VOCABULARY These three course can increase your reading skills to college level. Also, the vocabulary words will help with reading comprehension and understanding of complex writing. Both high school and college students should already be familiar with most of the words in these courses. Prefixes
are added to the beginning of words to change their meaning. Three
common prefixes are dis-, mis-, and un-. The prefix a and an mean not or without. The related study-words are amoral, atypical, atom, and apathy.
Suffixes, Vocabulary
Suffixes are used with base words to form new words. For example, the words derived from “develop” include develops, developed, development, developing, and developer. Knowing this helps to learn the spelling and meaning of such words as portage, import, export, report, porter, deport, portable, comportment, and portfolio. Confusing Words, Vocabulary Instructions for Teaching Teachers may preview and explain each lesson before students start the lesson. Have students look up the words and write a sentence using each word in the lesson. This will help them get used to using the dictionary. If students get wrong answers, have them go back, look up the words, and rewrite the sentences. You can assume that they guessed at the meaning and did not look the word up if they cannot write a proper sentence using the word. When necessary, look back to get the correct meaning of each word before writing the sentence, then write the sentence. By looking up the words and writing a sentence using each word in the lessons, they will get used to using the English dictionary. You can assume that students who get incorrect answers guessed at the meaning and did not look up the word. If student do not understand a word, have them look it up in the English dictionary online. Testing The test can cover the following areas: spelling, vocabulary, usage,
and pronunciation. Write a sentence using each of the study words. If necessary, look up
the correct meaning of each word before writing the sentence. Do not guess at the answers! |
